to show of barack obama that we don't already know? seeing is believing. the three times the debates have changed the lead in a presidential race. each time it was about the words, but also that something else, something that told voters what they didn't know and all of a sudden mattered a lot. and finally, bad numbers. barack obama's ahead in nearly every national poll and battle ground state poll. but what do we really make of the crunchers who say mitt romney has just a 1-5 chance to win this election? hi, i'm chris mathews. welcome to the show. with us today, new york magazine's john, trish and kelly and the huffington post's d howard. with just over a month to go for mitt romney, given the polls, the debates may be it. it could change the narrative that has dogged him or cemented. romney has the same urgent must-do list that he at the republican convention. only now could be his last chance. today we're going to look at romney's career, back at his career, at some missteps in past debates and also at some gems from barack obama. first up, first on romney's must-do list, get likable.

in the presidential debates in this election cycle between president barack obama and former massachusetts governor mitt romney. the stage is ready in denver, colorado. the university of denver. and all of the expectations management to the contrary, the two men you're going to see tonight are very good debaters. they have four ivy league degrees between them, after all, and 50 debates between them, though not against each other until tonight. there is a critical third man on that stage tonight in denver. that's the moderator, jim lehrer of pbs. he's done a dozen of these. and the rules, which he will announce at the start, give him broad leeway to guide the conversation and the debate. it is a cold room in denver. the campaigns wanted the temperature low. and it's not likely to stay that way once we get under way. both men have been prepping for days. this happens to be the obamas' 20th wedding anniversary. moments ago we saw a warm embrace between mrs. romney and mrs. obama. they both met each other at the front of the hall. their hiss, this is the first of three meetings debate style between the

. here is what got me. because i gave the dry summary on the area, i was instantly the target of the anti-obama crowd, because i didn't call into question how the unemployment number got below 8%, i didn't suggest that number might have been rigged to look good for president obama. i was pillared as a house man owned by the democrats. please! look, my philosophy is crystal clear. you can't look through it. don't bother. you can't question its authenticity. you can't say it's political, and more importantly, can't question its legitimacy for one party without questioning it the other. i understand the accusations from partisan people. they feel robbed of one of the best talking points, unemployment rate stubbornly above 8%, to attack those who accept the number and don't offhandedly accept it is wrong is outrageous. i don't like how the number is put together. i would outsource the compilation number, and you can calculate data much faster and more efficiently. i look at the labor department the way i looked at replacement referees in the nfl. terrible, but nonpartisan, equal-opportunity mistake
